Gah! He could be so infuriating! They’d been having a decent conversation. He’d helped her with an idea or two for her book release, they’d even laughed a little, and then he had up and turn into an arsehole. What was so wrong with wanting to pay her part?

“Elizabeth?”

She startled and turned to Ana, who stood in the door of the music room. “Are you finished with school work already?”

“I’ve completed what I have to do for today, but I’m taking a break before practicing.” She glanced over to her brother’s study door. “Did you have an argument with Fitzwilliam?”

“I went in to ask his advice. Then, all I did was offer to pay for some of my food since I’ve lived here.”

Ana exhaled noisily and rolled her eyes. “You do know that my big brother feels it’s his lot in life to take care of everyone? Haven’t you ever noticed how he helps out his friends? He gave Bingley and Jane a cottage on the grounds for as long as they need it, and he brought you here for the duration as well. I mean, he’s let Caroline Bingley stay here for the holidays—all because he didn’t want to hurt Bingley’s feelings. He can’t stand Caroline. He’ll never admit it, but I’m sure she terrifies him.”

Elizabeth started to chuckle but bit her cheek instead. “I really shouldn’t laugh at that.”

“Oh yes, you should,” said Ana nodding. “The best is the way he looks at her talons when they dig into his arm. You’d think she was going to amputate it.”

“Ana, that’s terrible.” If Ana kept it up, she’d give in to laughing. How would that look if Darcy came out of his study to find her chuckling it up at his expense with his younger sister? “Besides, he finally let me write him a cheque.”

Ana’s eyebrows nearly lifted to her hairline. “How much do you want to bet the funds never come out of your account?”

“He wouldn’t?” Elizabeth groaned and pushed her fingers into her hair, slightly pulling. How was that man so infuriating? “I didn’t think to question how easily he backed down.”

The girl’s hands landed on Elizabeth’s shoulders. “Think about it this way. He cares, Elizabeth, or he wouldn’t have brought you here. I don’t know about you, but when we have guests, it’s because we enjoy having them around. We don’t consider the expense—not that there really is one. You’re not exactly expensive to feed—you eat rabbit food, for Pete’s sake.”

“Hey, some of that rabbit food can be pricey,” said Elizabeth jabbing a finger at her friend.

“And a lot of it isn’t. We have a kitchen garden right next to the house, and the rest comes from the Home Farm. If Mrs. Reynolds has needed to purchase anything special, it won’t break us. Besides, you brought a ton of pantry items with you. I’ve never seen so much rice and dried beans in my life.”

Elizabeth smiled and shook her head. “Rice and dried beans take forever to spoil, and I can make a myriad of recipes from them.
